When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

The words of Jesus on the cross teach us that our experiences of loneliness, even abandonment by God, are valid. In the darkest moment of his life, Jesus experienced what felt like the loss of his most intimate relationship, and then he died.

Even in our darkest moments, Jesus’ experience on the cross reminds us that we are not alone.

Have you ever felt abandoned by God?
